Department of Sociology

In accordance with article 6.2.2 (Notification of Courses) of the Contract Faculty Collective Agreement, applications are invited for the following courses, to be offered during the following sessions:

Fall 2026

SOC 129 Sociology of Gender and Society

WF 8:30 – 9:59

This course critically examines the ways gender informs the social world in which we live. It explores how we experience gender in the world around us; considers how we develop our gendered identities; explores the workings of the institutions that shape our gendered lives, and leads to an understanding the relationship between gender and the social structures.

SOC 219 Sociology of the Body

MW 17:30-18:59

Notions of the body as the cultural representation of our contemporary “embodied” selves will be explored. This course will uncover the strategies of social, political and economic forces as theses problematize the body and seek to control, manipulate, and alter behaviour.

SOC 322 Urban Sociology

MW 17:30-18:59h

Theories of urban growth and development; comparative analysis of cities and their problems. Prerequisites: SOC
101 and SOC 110

SOC 331 Deviance II

TUTH 8:30-9:59h

Selected topics such as drugs, homosexuality, prostitution and juvenile delinquency will be discussed. Prerequisite: SOC 208. SOC 230 recommended.

Winter 2027

SOC 110 Research Methodology

TBD

Sociological research will be dealt with in its quantitative and qualitative orientations. Students will be introduced to techniques of conceptualization, hypothesis formulation, and operationalization. This course is required of all Sociology Majors and Honours students.

SOC 245 Racialization and Ethnicity

TBD

The purpose of this course is to explore the ethnic and racial diversity of Canada’s plural and multicultural society. It critically assesses justifications of racism and of gendered racialization with knowledge of such processes and other harmful historical constructions.

The courses will be allotted in accordance with the Contract Faculty Collective Agreement, including the applicable rules for seniority.

Contract faculty members who have seniority points may simply submit a letter of interest via e-mail. Other candidates should submit full applications by e-mail (covering letter, curriculum vitae, and any other materials required to demonstrate that they have the necessary expertise to teach the course) to socchair@ubishops.ca, by June 26, 2026.

Remuneration is $9560.92, with travel and marking expenses provided where appropriate.
